Dawn and the Dog

Image
We've just reached that lovely time of year when sunrise and dog walking are in perfect harmony. This morning the aircraft contrails just didn't want to disappear. This happens when humidity in the upper atmosphere is high then the contrails will persist for longer. Whatever the science it made for a great phone picture.

This is the latest music video from Kings of Leon, the studio images were supplied by Getty and I did the pre press work on them. Works quite well I think.

Mine's Bigger than Yours

Image
The thing I love about film and TV kit is its so much more stable and chunckier than most of the stuff made for stills. This week I had to get the Gigapan up to first floor level to shoot a day night translight, the solution a ladderpod. Yep thats it a tripod made of 3 ladders supplied by www.independentgrip.co.uk

The Gigapan felt way more stable up there than on ground level and way quicker than building a scaff tower. The backdrop will be a panoramic view up and down the street in the upcoming TV series Topsey and Tim.

Tarts for Troops

Working for a good cause a few celebs and the Houses of Parliament thrown in all adds up to a good job. www.blindveterans.org.uk is certainly a good cause it helps vets who have issues with sight as a result of combat or for other reasons readjust their lives. The celebs were Johnny Ball and Alec Newman. Alec had worked with the vets when he was researching a part of a solider blinded in combat returning home and has kept in contact since. Also in the picture above is Ken Facal one of the members helped by the charity.
And the best part when you have a few beers on the terrace afterwards only the MP in this case Ian Swales (Redcar) is allowed to get the beers in. So a big thank you to Ian for hosting the event and buying the beer.

It's a Dogs Dinner

Image
The other morning I came down to feed the dog, to find someone else had got there first. The dog was not happy but for me it was a chance to play with my new Canon XF305. Really impressed with this camera so far. All my video work to date has been done on the 5D so its good to work on a normal video camera as well.

Festival Time-lapse

Image
Time-lapse is fantastic I love it. I get really excited about how things are going to work out there is always a level of unpredictability about it. I shot this with 2 Canon 5dmk2s in some of the worst of last years weather. I was undercover most of the time but the poor sods putting this up really deserved their money. There are so many applications for time-lapse it is a great way of telling a story that involves change, I believe it is greatly underused by business.

Anyway here it is take a look.

Joys of UK Weather and a perfect location.

Image
So what do I need to make me happy, here is a list.

1  parking nearby.
2  a good view.
3  a tree to tie the dog to.
4  some peachy weather.
5 Knowing someone is paying for me to be there.

Ah Happiness

Been waiting weeks to get this shot day after day of crap weather then bingo Cheltenham reveals itself in all its glory. This was for a small translight going into the media dept. at Gloucester University. Only one downside cowpats everywhere but no cows until I saw them coming back from milking. Frisky cows stroppy dog heavy bags bad combination I was out of there.

Hair cut time

Image
The Blog dog is having a seriously bad hair day today. I feel a trip to Hair of the Dog is not far away.

Top marks Gigapan

Image
A few weeks back my Gigapan Epic Pro got a real pasting (see previous post ) in Iceland and ceased to function in the normal way. Now strictly speaking this was not Gigapans fault but stuff which is labelled Pro gear should stand up to a bit of hard core treatment as it comes with the territory, so just a word of warning don't get your Epic Pro wet. I am looking for a suitable rain cover will let you know if I find one.
Distraught I was reduced to working in the old way in a big tranlight shoot at Kings Cross and frankly I wanted my Gigapan back.

So an email to customer service a quick video to show the problem and Hey Presto this morning a box arrives with spare part in and The Gigapan is once more ready for action.

Gigapan customer service 10/10.

Interesting use of carrots.

Snowy Flight into Heathrow

Image
2 hours late leaving Reykjavik but the view of the Scottish Highlands was fantastic snow on most of the higher peaks but as we routed south over the Lakes the cloud got thicker and thicker ending in a snowy landing at Heathrow.

Once we landed no bays available then no ramps then no coaches but all in all Heathrow you did get me home  6/10 which is better than last time.

Icelandic Adventure

Image
So why is it when I come to Iceland its mild (relatively speaking ) and wet and back in the UK it's snowing. This is one of the 25 wonders of the world though the romance of The Blue Lagoon does diminish just a little when you realise the hot water is a byproduct of the power station next door and not bubbling up through the floor. Having said that its still on my must come back when not working and before I die list.

Nothing bad happened on the way out Icelandair were lovely and didn't loose or break anything my driver was at the airport. Hotel was super the Icelandairs Marina (few strange signs in toilet)

So the payback the weather was shit.  One thing about shooting translights you often end up standing in one place for hours to get different light and weather conditions. We wanted a transition from dark through to the half light which is all you get at this time of year. Shooting on the Canon 5d mk2 and the Gigapan Epic pro on raw stitching 35 frames together on PTGui.…

Location Location Location

Image
Keeping a note of specific locations for shots you may be looking for in the future is always a good idea. This is one of my favorites ( Wittenham Clumps) in Oxfordshire. I was looking for some big sky views where I could see down to the horizon which unless you live on the coast is not that easy to find. I wanted a night sky  with gentle graduation so this location is perfect. Easy to park, the dog loves it as he can beetle around while I am shooting just fed up with the mud but looking at the weather boards we could be in for some pretty chilly weather coming up. Gear was the Canon 5d mk2 and Gigapan Epic pro.
